The Kingdom’s advertising slogan of the past few years, “Amazing Thailand”, was such an unrivalled success simply because it delivered precisely what it claimed. It was less a catchphrase and more a statement of fact. In its rich diversity of sights and scenes, supported by a highly evolved tourism product accommodating nearly 10 million visitors annually, Thailand is remarkable in its ability to fulfill the travel promise.A land of golden temples, stunning tropical beaches and lush forested hills, Thailand is also a tranquil oasis in an increasingly hectic world. Secure in its dedication to the gentle Buddhist faith and devotion to its beloved monarchy, the Kingdom complements a glorious centuries-old culture and rich natural diversity with a way of life that preserves a sense of calm and hospitality. And it is all so accessible.
Located roughly midway between China and India, Thailand is a major aviation hub for both regional and international carriers. Bangkok is served by most of the world’s leading airlines, while Thai Airways International flies to more than 70 destinations in 35 countries around the globe. From the beaches to the hills, no place is much more than an hour away from the capital.
All countries are different but some are more different than others. Thailand, arguably the most rewarding of all Asian destinations, is uniquely itself. Throughout more than 700 years of independence, the Thai Kingdom has displayed an amazing continuity, preserving its heritage to the extent that enduring traditions exemplify a quintessential “Thainess”, which indelibly colours the Kingdom and gives the sense of somewhere that is different. At the same time, Thailand enters the 21st cdentury as a dynamic modern nation, happily embracing all that is new.
Such a fortunate marriage of the old and the new, of defining traditions and high-tech innovations, makes all the difference. Here is not only a truly multi-faceted destination of enormous cultural and topographical diversity, but also all the modern advantages to ensure delegates meet with the most pleasurable travel experience. Ensuring a stay in the utmost comfort is Thailand’s time honoured tradition of gracious hospitality, which is today supported by some of the finest hotels in the world. Bangkok naturally boasts a full choice of deluxe properties, but luxury is not limited to the capital and top hotels and resorts are to be found in all major destinations around the country, as are superb health spas. Standards of facilities and amenities are of true international excellence. Service is in a class of its own and that makes all the difference, allowing guests to appreciate the finer touches of caring hospitality.
Thailand, as a prime tourism location, has been developing into an increasingly popular destination to hold a range of international events, from the launch of new products to private corporate seminars. At present, many organizations have found that holding marketing events such as conventions and exhibitions can be a more cost effective form of advertising with the benefit that they have the opportunity to get to know their customer base better. Event planning has become one of Thailand’s unique strengths, and the meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions industry has great potential for future development and growth, to become a key sector in Thailand’s already well established tourism industry. In comparison to other Asia’s top M.I.C.E countries such as Singapore and Hong Kong, Thailand offers more cost effective event solutions with business and cultural resources to appeal to both business professionals and draw in tourist oriented visitors.
Both leading hotels and independent convention centres provide the ideal meeting space, whether it is for 20 or 20,000 delegates. Venues, large and small, combine elegant settings with state-of-the-art conference support equipment, expert catering from coffee breaks to gala banquets, and, most importantly, professional planning. If any proof is needed of Thailand’s standing as a favoured MICE choice, know that in 2008 the Kingdom hosted the world’s biggest convention where more than 30,000 delegates of Lions Clubs International gathered for their annual caucus.
When it comes to celebration, no one does it quite so well as the Thais, and theme parties can transport guests to a traditional village, the heart of the jungle, a tropical paradise… possibilities are limited only by the imagination. As for leisure activities and pre- and post- convention tours Thailand is unbeatable. Here variety is truly the spice of life. From magnificent palaces to majestic ruins, from tranquil rural towns to thrilling beach resorts, from idyllic islands to national parks rich in flora and fauna, there is no shortage of choice in where to go and what to see. Soft adventure travel is a further option, and trekking, elephant-back safaris, four – wheel drive safaris, mountain biking, white – water rafting, eco – tours and other active pursuits are all well established. Shopping is another discovery, not just for unique souvenirs and handicrafts, but also for a host of luxury buys, including silks, antiques, gems and jewellery, and top designer fashions. Where to buy can be as tempting as what to buy, and shopping venues range from air-conditioned elegance of smart plazas and malls to the bustle and bargaining found at curbside stalls and street markets.
